Strengths and weaknesses in a job interview: how to answer convincingly

“What are your strengths and weaknesses?” is one of the most common questions in German interviews. With a clear structure and real examples it becomes an advantage.

Recruiters are not looking for a perfect self-portrait. They check how well you know yourself, whether your strengths fit the role and how you handle weaknesses.

Clichés like “I'm a perfectionist” sound rehearsed. Concrete examples from your work that match the job ad are far more convincing.

The framework: trait, evidence, benefit

  • Name the trait: a strength the job ad asks for
  • Give evidence: a short, concrete situation with a result
  • Show the benefit: why it matters for this role

Example strength

“One of my strengths is working in a structured way under time pressure. At the last quarterly close I coordinated reconciliation across 40 cost centres and we finished two days early. I'd like to bring that to your controlling team.”

Strength, evidence with a number and a link to the role – in three sentences.

Strengths with matching evidence

StrengthPossible evidence
Analytical thinkingFound and fixed the root cause of a process error
CommunicationHandled difficult client or team conversations successfully
OrganisationCoordinated a project, event or move on time
Willingness to learnLearned new software or German to B2/C1 quickly
Intercultural skillsWorked in international teams or several countries
ResilienceHandled high workload reliably over several weeks

Naming weaknesses honestly and confidently

Choose a real weakness that is not critical for the role. If you apply for accounting, don't mention a lack of accuracy.

The second part is what counts: what are you doing about it? That shows self-reflection and a willingness to develop.

Weakness: weak vs. strong wording

Weak

“I'm too much of a perfectionist and work too hard.”

Sounds rehearsed and disguises a strength as a weakness.

Strong

“Presenting to larger groups used to be hard for me. So I took over regular team updates and attended a presentation course. Today I present to the department every month.”

Genuine, concrete and with visible progress.

Tip for international applicants

German language skills can be an honest weakness if you also show how you are improving – for example with a course, target level and timeline.

Common mistakes

  • Naming no weakness (“I can't think of one”)
  • Listing strengths without examples
  • Weaknesses that are a deal-breaker for the role
  • Answers that are too long or too self-critical
  • Strengths that don't match the job ad

FAQ

How many strengths and weaknesses should I name?

Two to three strengths and one weakness are usually enough. Prepare backup examples anyway.

Can I name perfectionism as a weakness?

Better not – it is considered worn out. Choose a concrete, genuine weakness.

How do I find suitable strengths?

Read the job ad and mark the required skills. Pick those you can back up with examples.

How long should my answer be?

About 30 to 60 seconds per point.
