What to wear to a job interview: the right dress code for German companies

The right interview outfit does not need to be expensive. It should fit the industry, look well cared for and let you focus on the conversation rather than your clothes.

Use the company's normal workplace style as a guide and, when unsure, choose one level more formal. Photos on the careers or team page can provide clues, but they are not a binding dress code.

Fit, cleanliness and an intentional overall appearance matter more than brands. Your clothes should support a professional impression, not distract from your answers.

Dress code by work environment

Leadership rolesMore formal than the team's everyday styleExperimental or very sporty combinations

There are exceptions. Follow any dress code stated by the company.

Build a reliable interview outfit

  • Choose clean, ironed clothes that fit well.
  • Use a small number of restrained colours and subtle patterns.
  • Wear clean, closed shoes that you have worn before.
  • Keep jewellery, fragrance and visible accessories understated.
  • Bring a neat bag or folder for your documents.

Authentic, but appropriate to the role

You do not need to hide your personality. Within the right level of formality, choose cuts and colours that make you feel confident. Looking disguised can be just as unhelpful as appearing clearly too casual.

Clothing for a video interview

The target role's dress code still applies online. Test how colours and patterns look on camera. Fine stripes can flicker, while strong contrasts may make your face and background look busy.

Dress appropriately from head to toe, not only above the desk. This improves posture and avoids awkward moments if you need to stand up.

Prepare for an online interview

What to check the day before

  • Try on the complete outfit and test your freedom of movement
  • Consider the weather, journey and temperature changes
  • Prepare a small emergency or care kit if useful
  • Clean your shoes and pack your documents
  • Check the invitation for clues about the location or a site tour

Common mistakes

  • Wearing a completely new outfit for the first time on interview day
  • Using strong fragrance or very prominent accessories
  • Assuming jeans or trainers always fit – or never fit – any company
  • Ignoring safety requirements for a site tour
  • Dressing so formally that you move and speak less confidently

Interview dress code FAQ

Can I wear jeans to an interview?

A dark, neat pair may fit some start-ups, IT teams or trades. Check the company culture and style them professionally.

Do I have to wear a suit?

No. Suits are common mainly in formal sectors and some leadership roles. Business casual is enough in many companies.

Which colours are safe?

Navy, grey, charcoal, white and muted accent colours are usually easy to combine. The coherent overall appearance matters most.

What about a trial work day?

Ask about workwear and safety requirements. Practical work has different clothing needs from the interview itself.
