The cover sheet in a German application: useful, optional or unnecessary?
A cover sheet is optional in Germany. It can add structure to an application – but in digital processes with applicant tracking systems it often just takes up space.
A Deckblatt is the first page of an application: photo, name, target position and contact details, sometimes a list of attachments.
It is not mandatory. Whether it helps depends on how you submit the application and how extensive your documents are.
This article shows when a cover sheet adds value, how to structure it and when to skip it.
When a cover sheet makes sense – and when it does not
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| online portal with form fields | skip it, the data is captured anyway |
| email application as a single PDF | optional, useful with many attachments |
| extensive application with several references | useful, with a list of attachments |
| traditional printed application folder | common and welcome |
| creative or design roles | useful, also as a designed title page |
| ad states a maximum of two pages | skip it and use the space for content |
If the ad explicitly asks only for a CV and cover letter, do not send a cover sheet.
What belongs on a cover sheet
A cover sheet stays deliberately sparse. It does not repeat CV content but places the application in context.
- the heading „Bewerbung“ and the exact job title
- the reference or job ID if the ad states one
- your name, address, phone number and email address
- optionally the application photo
- optionally your earliest possible start date
- optionally a short list of attachments
Keep contact details on the CV too
Never rely on contact details appearing only on the cover sheet. If the application is parsed automatically or forwarded, the CV must be complete on its own.
Example structure
Application for Industrial Electronics Technician (Job ID 48219) · Thomas Novak · Ringstraße 12, 80331 Munich · +49 151 2345678 · thomas.novak@example.com · Available from 1 November 2026 · Attachments: CV, cover letter, training certificate, references
Clearly structured, no blocks of text – the rest belongs in the cover letter and CV.
Cover sheets and applicant tracking systems
Many companies parse applications automatically. A cover sheet with graphics, text boxes or columns can produce unusable data – or the system reads the first page as the CV.
If you use one, keep it text-based and simple: no text frames, no tables, a clear font, real text lines instead of image elements.

Before/after: slimming down a cover sheet
Before
Full-page background image, name in a decorative font, a motivational quote, contact details as a graphic.
Problem: no readable data and no added value.
After
„Application for Project Assistant (Job ID 3312)“, followed by name, address, phone, email, start date and attachment list.
Benefit: instantly clear, machine-readable, organises extensive documents.
Common cover sheet mistakes
- using a cover sheet instead of a cover letter
- repeating CV content
- listing contact details only on the cover sheet
- adding motivational text or quotes
- setting contact details as an image instead of text
- inventing a job title instead of copying it from the ad
- sending the cover sheet as a separate file when one PDF is required
- adding it despite an explicit page limit

Frequently asked questions
Is a cover sheet mandatory in Germany?
No, it is optional. What is expected is a CV and – depending on the role – a cover letter.
Does the cover sheet count towards the CV page limit?
No, it is a separate page before the CV. If the ad states a maximum page count, it is better to leave it out.
Does the photo go on the cover sheet or the CV?
Either is fine, but only once. With a cover sheet photo, leave it off the CV.
Does a cover sheet replace the cover letter?
No. The cover sheet contains no argument; the cover letter does.
How do I send cover sheet, letter and CV?
Ideally as one PDF in the order cover sheet, cover letter, CV, attachments.
Does a cover sheet hurt automated screening?
It can if it is graphics-heavy. A simple, text-based cover sheet is unproblematic.
